Helping Ukrainian Women on their Journey to Work – An interview with Iryna Sydorova

What is the name of your session or sessions?
Ukrainian Women

What is your session about?
This session was created primarily to offer a safe and comfortable space for Ukrainian women who, due to unexpected circumstances, found themselves in migration and were not prepared for it.

Can you describe what happens during a typical session?
During the session, we discuss the specifics of the UK job market. We talk about how to adapt experience gained in Ukraine to the needs of local employers and how to highlight personal strengths.

Who is the session for?
The session is for women who want to share their experiences, doubts, and achievements with each other in Ukrainian. It’s a space to support and inspire one another.

What kind of participants usually attend? What needs or barriers are they facing?
The participants are Ukrainian-speaking women who want to find a job in the UK. However, due lack of confidence, unfamiliarity with local job-seeking rules, they are facing challenges with applications. Many ladies also experience language barriers during their job search.

What makes this session helpful or different from other support available?
This session stands out because participants can communicate in their native language and ask any questions without fear of judgment. They not only ask the adviser, but also learn from each other. This creates a sense of unity and support. Realising you’re not alone in your situation is very empowering.

What kind of feedback have you had from participants?
I usually receive a lot of positive feedback after each session. Participants express gratitude for the opportunity to discuss employment-related issues with others in similar situations. They value being able to share both successes and difficulties, as life is complex and multifaceted.

Could you share any quotes or stories from women who found the session(s) useful?
“Thank you for the information I received during the LinkedIn profile session. For me, it wasn’t just information but also a set of action points. I found a lot of useful tips during the session.” – Oksana

Do women attend the session more than once? If so, why do you think women come back or recommend it to others?
About half of the participants attend the session regularly. This shows that the sessions are not only useful but also engaging. It gives women an opportunity to share recent changes and see their progress over time.

What do they get out of it emotionally, socially, or practically?
Participants gain positive emotions, a sense of confidence, clarity about their next steps, and new friendships.

What changes or progress have you seen in participants over time?
I’ve seen participants reassess their self-worth, accept their new reality, become open to change, and lose the fear of moving forward into the unknown.

Almost all participants have completed at least one course through our programme, and many have found employment. But most importantly, they gain a sense of freedom and belief in their own abilities.

Why should someone join this session if they’re unsure or nervous?
I believe that after attending one of our sessions, a woman will feel the support of the community and start believing that she can build a new career and make new friends.

What would you say to encourage a new participant to try it?
Don’t be afraid to try, make mistakes, and grow. Success is not what we see in someone else’s pictures — success is what makes you happy.
